Bribery Comm. withdraws case against Chief Minister
The Bribery Commission yesterday withdrew a case filed against Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake and three others and thereafter they were discharged by the Colombo Chief Magistrate. In this case the Central Province Chief Minister and three others were allegedly accused by the Bribery Commission of having influenced a Kandy School Principal to enroll a child to Grade 1 in 2008. They were discharged from the charges following the Commission withdrawing the case against the suspects yesterday.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya discharged Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Education Director Attanayake Mudiyanselage Thilakeratne, Additional Education Director Wijesiri Herath and President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Coordinator Hema Madiwela when Counsel for the Bribery Commission moved to withdraw the case.
The case was taken up in open court on a motion and then Magistrate Pilapitiya laid down the case. Thereafter the case was taken up in the Magistrate’s chamber and the Bribery officers who assisted the Prosecution’s counsel in the inquiry said the case against the suspect’s were withdrawn by the Commission and thus the Magistrate discharged the suspects from the charges.
The suspects were charged by the Commission to Investigate into Allegations of Bribery or Corruption for allegedly influencing the Principal of Haramitiyala Sri Dheerananda Maha Vidyalaya to enroll a child to grade one in the year 2008 violating the admission procedure of the Education Department.
The suspects were earlier released on bail of Rs one million each by Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli and the case was fixed for inquiry on June 11. (T. Farook Thajudeen)
