BASL denies claims by President’s Media



The President’s Media Division yesterday said the Bar Association and its President had reiterated that many organizations had acted for political mileage under the pretext of the BASL during the past few weeks. However, BASL President Wijeydasa Rajapakshe denied such claims.

The release was issued after a meeting held between the BASL and the President yesterday.

The release said BASL officials had stated “some groups are trying to benefit politically under the guise of the BASL and the BASL was not involved in some of the incidents that took place during the past several weeks”.

However this was denied by the Mr. Rajapakshe who said “There were several ex- co members who expressed their personal opinions during the meeting with the President”.

 Mr. Rajapakshe said people like W. Dayarathne who is also the Chairman of the Press Council, was expressing his opinion at the meeting.

 “Their interests are not the Bar, but some other political interests” he said.

However, the head of the Bar further added that the hoisting of  black flags and cracking of coconuts in front of the Supreme Court complex were not done by the BASL.

BASL President Wijeydasa Rajapakshe and other zonal representatives together with Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem, Minister G.L Peris, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Presidential Secretary Lalith Weerathunge together with the President participated in the meeting. (Susitha R. Fernando)
