Australian Immigration Minister Brendan O'Connor has released a statement affirming Australia will continue to return failed asylum seekers to Sri Lanka after a damning report of the country's detention centres by Human Rights Watch.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) claimed widespread rape of detainees during the separatist conflict that ended in May 2009, and said politically motivated sexual violence by the military and police has continued.
The report, coinciding with the UN Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva, gathered accounts of 75 cases of alleged rape and sexual abuse between 2006 and 2012 in both legal and "secret" detention centres in Sri Lanka, HRW said.
Today, The High Court in London has blocked the deportation to Sri Lanka of a group of failed Tamil asylum-seekers on the basis that repatriation is too dangerous.
But Minister O'Connor says the government does not return asylum seekers without assessing any claims for protection against up-to-date country information. (Source: World News Australia)

They are economic migrants. If they are concerned about threat to their lives only they will go to their homeland Tamil Nadu. And why not? Tamil Nadu is a stinking dump.

Now, Colin, why did you have to leave th motherland and go to Australia? You got free education, free health and a lot of other things. Your motherland needs you there - not in Australia.
Julie Bishop thought ALL returned Sri Lankan asylumseekers were non-Tamls. Please look at the facts before tyoing these in.

Recent incident where one former tiger killer , now a bogus asylum seeker , tried to rape a uni student have shown Aussies who are the real rapists . So they will try to kick off these killers / rapists out of Australia ASAP. Canada , UK and US , wait till these murderers / rapist to show their true colours . Then you too will follw the Aussie way .

As an Australian Citizen of SL origin I applaud the minister's decision to send them back. Else I will feel cheated that I had to wait 4 years, qualify, and go through the system in order to migrate here. We don't want que jumpers in Australia from anywhere with BS stories. The Tamil diaspora here has no leg to stand on. They are so low that they even tried to distribute leaflets outside the MCG during the Cricket. Aussies took no notice of them and I applaud them.
Julie Bishop, the deputy leader of the Liberals who was in SL recently correctly said on TV, "India is only 30km away. Why would they want to come all this way and spend AUD10,000 when Tamil Nadu is a Tamil heaven?"
No one could have said it better! Good on you Julie.
