Audio: Will not give up- Macrae



The Channel-4 journalists today said they would continue their endeavor on reporting on the situation in the North of Sri Lanka despite protests and preventions.

Director Channel-4 Callum Macrae told Daily Mirror that they would continue their endeavor despite protests and preventions.

Mr. Macrae made this point while returning to Colombo after their journey to North was intercepted by protesters.

“We are here to do a job and we will continue in our endeavor despite stoppages,” he said in response to a question raised by the Daily Mirror as to whether they intend to go to North or would leave the country.

He said the team was currently discussing as to how they could get on with their job.

Mr. Macrae said they set off to Jaffna following the invitation tendered to us by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday. It was reported that President Rajapaksa had told them they would be free to travel anywhere in the country.

Taking of today’s incident, he said the train they were traveling in was blocked for two hours by protesters at Anuradhapura.

Mr. Macrae said they would seek explanation from the government as to how the protesters knew about their whereabouts.

“This kind of behavior does not agree with the Commonwealth Principles, he added as there should be freedom of the press.

Responding to the publicity they had got in the local media, he said there were good journalists in Sri Lanka but they should try to be more independent. (Yohan Perera)
