Audio: No need to resign: Vijayamuni

Deputy Minister of Education Vijith Vijayamuni de Zoysa said there is no reason for the Education Minister to resign, despite the continuous errors and mishaps in recent examinations conducted by the Ministry of Education and the Department of Examinations.

“Just because an official working within the Ministry had committed a wrongful act doesn’t mean that the Minister has to take responsibility and resign. Investigations have revealed that the fault for this current mess was due to a corrupt official at the state Printing Department. Therefore I don’t see the reason why the Minister should resign” he said.

The Deputy Minister went on to state that all officials including the Commissioner of the Department of Examinations have volunteered to face body checks and the precautionary measures in order to avert a repeat of this situation.

De Zoysa also stated that the granting of 19 marks would serve justice to all candidates.

“The granting of 19 marks to all candidates would serve justice to the students. The other option would have been to call for a re-sit of the examination in the particular subject which would have caused heartache to the students due to no fault of theirs. Therefore, we believe that this would be the most potent mechanism more so since this examination is not a critical exam” he said. (Hafeel Farisz)
