Arrested Chinese to be deported



A group of 100 Chinese nationals arrested for a major telecommunication racket operating from Sri Lanka, which duped major Chinese businessman into depositing millions of Dollars into bank accounts are to be deported to Taiwan and China within the ‘ next few weeks’ a source at the Chinese embassy confirmed.

The Chinese police has requested for the extradition of those arrested as per general international practice, the source said.

The 74 males and 26 females were arrested in a joint operation carried out by the Chinese police and the Sri Lankan police force. The operation uncovered a detailed, highly sophisticated cyber fraud operation which was carried out using state of the art equipment in order to dupe Chinese businessman living in mainland China.

The source said that a majority of those arrested were residents of Chinese Taiwan.

“94 of those arrested are from Chinese Taiwan while the rest were from mainland China. All of them will be extradited to their respective states after the initial court process in Sri Lanka is over, as per international practice” the source further said.

A highly placed mission official hailed the arrests resulting from a joint operation as a good example of the Police Departments’ commitment to fight cyber and currency fraud.

“The Chinese police thanked their Lankan counterparts for their full corporation in ensuring that the suspects were nabbed. It is a good example of the two countries police departments’ coordination to fight against crimes of this sort” he said. (HF)
