The Deputy Commissioner of Inland revenue Department in Anuradhapura was arrested by the Bribery Commission officers while she was allegedly accepting Rs. 500,000 as a bribe today, an official said.

A spokesman for the Bribery and Corruption Commission said that the deputy Commissioner, who is a lady, had initially demanded one million rupees from a businessman in order to reduce the tax payment of 9.5 million rupees to Rs. 3.5 million. The businessman had reduced the bribe amount to Rs. 500,000.

However, the businessman made a complaint to the bribery commission that made the arrest this morning while she was accepting the money.(Dharsana Sanjeewa)

98% of all officials of this corrupt Dept. accepts bribes and thats a fact! Both them and taxpayers are responsible for this! Bribes are untold means of business in Sri Lanka from top to bottom.

What one cannot compehend is how is the politicians and Ministers who take massive bribes and commissions on every deal are never arrested and prosecuted. Politicians who never owned even a bicycle are now boasting they can buy Lamborginis for their offspring and themselves without any qualms. How can they justify such claims with their salaries.

This could be a revenge drama to the lady. may be by a politician or any other related party. this could be a well planed drama to get this lady cought red handed.

the biz man is not that fool to get cought for 9.5m just by informing bribery comm. for 500,000. or maybe biz man has been harassed by the lady officer for no reason. so it cold be an appeal that he don't hv to pay 9.5m

While I understand the acceptance of the bribe was morally wrong. The businessman is an idiot. Being a business man he obviously couldn't do the math. 3.5+.5 makes 4 mil, not 9.5 mil. Now the inland revenue knows about this idiot for sure, and will go after him for all 9.5 mil (just for cussedness).
