Appointment of deputies must be approved at convention

A special convention will have to be held if the United National Party (UNP) is to appoint three deputy leaders, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said today.

He told a news conference that the party constitution would have to be changed and the change approved at a convention before appointing three deputy leaders.

Mr. Attanayake said this matter would be decided at the next working committee meeting to be held next month. He did not rule out a constitutional change. “Deciding on the number of deputy leaders is not relevant to me,” he said.(Yohan Perera)
