Ending weeks of anxiousness and curiosity, the UNP Working Committee today decided to appoint a powerful supreme council to handle party affairs.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told journalists that following extensive discussions that lasted around five hours, the working committee unanimously decided to appoint such a council that would handle matters relating to future elections.
“Our Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had taken one step backward and made a policy decision to transfer powers to a supreme council,” he said indicating the likelihood of drastic changes in the party.
Accordingly Mr. Wickremesinghe, former Deputy Leaders Karu Jayasuriya and Sajith Premadasa will meet on Thursday to decide on the size and composition of the Supreme Council. However it is likely that Mr. Jayasuriya will head the council.
Meanwhile it was reported that party Chairman Gamini Jayawickrama Perera and National organizer Daya Gamage had informed the working committee that they would be stepping down from their posts. Therefore Mr. Attanayake said decisions on filling these posts would be made this week.
The working committee meeting started around 3. 30 pm under heavy police protection. Several party members called for radical changes in the party with some insisting a leadership change.
Several party members led by Vice President Eksath Bikkhu Sangamaya Ven. Malabe Seelaratana Thera staged a Sathyagraha calling all higher ups in the party to join hands and work in harmony without creating divisions in the party. They earlier submitted a petition to Mr. Attanayake in this regard.(Yohan Perera)
