Colombo, April 11 (Daily Mirror) - Chinese President Xi Jinping , in his recent meeting with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, has reportedly stressed the need for ‘fair and transparent’ environment for Chinese companies to invest in Sri Lanka.

The Chinese leader had further mentioned that China is not happy about its friends being influenced by other countries unnecessarily when taking decisions.

However , in the meeting which a top source mentioned as friendly and cordial , the Chinese President did not refer to any third country in his remarks.

The Prime Minister recently undertook a tour of China between March March 25 and 30 to attend the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2024.

He held bilateral discussions during the visit .

Meanwhile , during a separate meeting, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang has raised concerns about Sri Lanka announcing a moratorium on foreign research vessels in its Exclusive Economic Zone (ECZ) targeting Chinese ships while entertaining a similar vessel from Germany in between.

Mr. Gunawardena has reportedly responded saying Sri Lanka allowed the German vessel only for replenishment . He said Sri Lanka could not decline such requests for replenishment according to the law.

He also said Sri Lanka would not allow any country to use its territory against the interests of any country.

Read between the lines what President Xi is saying is don’t solicit bribes and incentives to do business. China is experiencing terrible failures in its construction sector with Evergrande, country garden etc and will need its money to fix these failures

We SriLankans welcome your suggestion,Hon.president Xi, Most Chinese companies and banks love to deal with corrupt SriLankan politicians and they too, who have been keeping self before country, both parties maintained under hand dealings with utmost secrecy, which brought them money as bribes or as commissions which goes to SL politicians foreign accounts, if you, president xi,expecting transparency, please expose or order to expose these companies to come out with these dealings

"Stressed the need for ‘fair and transparent’ environment for Chinese companies to invest in Sri Lanka" - The BOI must avoid harrassments, demanding Bribe On Investments by Chinese companies.

    Bogston Thursday, 11 April 2024 09:36 AM

Also be transparent of who asks for bribes

    Observer Thursday, 11 April 2024 09:58 AM

President Xi is directly pointing out at Govt level corruption when he mentions `Lack of transparency`. Unfortunately telling this to the PM of SL is like beating a dead horse! There is nothing he can do about it because he is a leader of the system which is the very problem.

We know who received a 50% donation towards the cost of the Norochcholi Project. Unfortunately, the Chinese contractors were forced to compromise on higher specifications to accommodate corrupt politician-family, and now the public is suffering from frequent system failures as a result. Kindly do not allow it this time.

I don't think even the most powerful leader can turn things around for prosperity of this nation once yr addicted its not easy to recover completely.....transparent don't think so...the mighty lankans

Dictator Xi statement is pure fake propaganda. He expects Chinese companies to be treated fairly and transparently, but Chinese companies act in exactly the opposite way. Chinese banks give loans for projects that are only carried out by Chinese companies. Chinese companies bribe Sri Lankan politicians to win a non-transparent tender process. They bring their own workforce, their own machines and their own building materials so that no Sri Lankan can participate. Xi doesn't have any friendship with other countries anyway. For him, poorer countries are only there to suck them dry and make them dependent on China.

Chinese too should be transparent on their way of working bribing corrupt politicians to do projects that are of no use to SL and trapping us tax payers in to prolonger debt

So, our PM got left , right and center from XI.,,

Correct good for all to read 2024 elections in solomon island, they had riots as bribes were given there too, so the people say.

Premalal Perera Thursday, 11 April 2024 12:46 PM

Are the Chinese fair and transparent over anything? They sold us Chinese feacal matter as fertiliser and demanded payment. They gave a claped out coal plant at many times the price of a new one. With friends like the Chinese who needs enemies?

    Amara Thursday, 11 April 2024 01:42 PM

Why do they made the bad practice after the ward end in 2009 to enter this island and now tell us no no no more :D

    Mandayan Thursday, 11 April 2024 03:18 PM

Between India and China, China is doing well because of less corruption inside the country. Severe punishments prevent that. But no point of preaching this country. Here corruption is institutionalised and pilfers are in Parliament waiting for their next chance.

    FredSnR Thursday, 11 April 2024 03:22 PM

SL takes from everybody, China, India, anyone who offers, bends the rules to get what they want, creates inconsistencies and conflict, look within, the problem is there

    Kamal Thursday, 11 April 2024 03:32 PM

So let's get this right ... it is ok for it's friends to be influenced China, and there is the need for ‘fair and transparent’ environment for Chinese companies to invest in Sri Lanka. However when dealing with China's unsolicited investments extreme secrecy is required, like when negotiating debt rescheduling with them, where they would sit in on others debt discussions but expect their negotiation to be done in utmost secrecy. Just treat China like any other country and do not give them any special treatment - and the main reason is that they have not reciprocated genuine friendship like India did during the crisis. China is all out to use their economic power to screw others and to buy their votes at places like the UN for them to do whatever that pleases them.

    Ron Thursday, 11 April 2024 03:54 PM

What ever said and done Chinese are extremely smart forward thinkers

    DOT Thursday, 11 April 2024 04:56 PM

Its fr both parties . You guys knows the art of buying rights !We ordinary citizens are suffering .

    Shera Thursday, 11 April 2024 05:54 PM

That means special favor is requested for Chinese companies to do business in SriLanka and get caught in a deeper trap. China is not the one to talk about transparency.

    Sambo Thursday, 11 April 2024 06:27 PM

The whole world knows doing business with Sri Lanka means handing out commissions to politicians.

    ANNECOCK Thursday, 11 April 2024 07:06 PM

you gave commission/bribes to Rajapaksa family to get high interest on your loans , now we are suffering . thank you

SriLankans believe not any other country ,but PRC indirectly responsible for our economic debacle,,SriLankan politicians are shameless crooks and they found most Chinese enterprises are ready to oil their palm and maintain dealings secret,so SL politicians wasted state wealth for their personal gain,on unproductive ventures with help of Chinese, now it’s all revealed, sad to say but SriLankans distrusting Chinese for their collaborations, so His excellency president Xi’s speech is very welcome by SriLankans but certainly within next couple of months this government is not in power, that transparency would be much appreciated then

    Ashley Sunday, 14 April 2024 06:25 AM

Whole lot of dealings with China is very vague, murky businesses, both parties involved have been sweared not to show any light to public, now leader of china demanding transparency, but within next couple of months, when this corrupt rule is over, China should have to be transparent, if it wants to do business with SriLanka
