Writ petition against Minister Ananda Wijepala dismissed

Colombo, May 7 (Daily Mirror) - The writ petition filed challenging Minister Ananda Wijepala’s eligibility to continue as a Member of Parliament was dismissed today by the Court of Appeal.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) activist Renuka Dushyantha Perera had filed this writ petition questioning Minister Wijepala’s eligibility to remain in Parliament.

The petitioner alleged that Minister Wijepala, while serving as a Member of Parliament, was appointed as the Chief of Staff to the President, thereby effectively becoming a public officer.

The Attorney General had raised preliminary objections challenging the maintainability of the petition.

The Court of Appeal two-judge-bench comprised Justice (Acting President) M.T. Mohammed Laffar and Justice Sarath Dissanayake.
