Worker remittances rise 22% in June

Colombo, July 13 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lankans working overseas sent home USD 635.7 million in remittances during June 2025, according to data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

This represents a 22% increase compared to June 2024, when remittance inflows totaled USD 519.6 million.

You are proud about it snd we too but think how much suffering and difficulties these people who work abroad go through to earn this money ? What conditions and facilities do they have? Many of them ? What our missions in these countries do? Do we have a minister for them to look after them ? It is high time to allocate a minister for foreign employment or emigrants ? Why not ? If NPP can’t do it no one will do it ? Out of 225 why not one minister for this high income generating source ? If you have a minister for agriculture or irrigation or for industries? Why not for foreign employment?

Hurrah, These are the blue collar workers like housemaids mostly from rural areas. Now the AKD government can give even more dollars to rupee rich politicians, professionals and urbanites (who bring in zero dollars to the country) to import more luxuries some duty free and send their kids abroad for education because local institutions are below their social standards and expectations . This will go on until another emergency like Covid happens and everyone wondering what happened to the main dollar income sources i.e. tourism and foreign employment. Then the powers that be will go all around world begging for help and the clueless public will start another aragalaya

The country might be jubilant about remittances because they are a source of foreign income and help boost the reserves. However, we should consider who is actually contributing to this. A large portion comes from young women who leave their families after marriage, and more recently, young women from the estate community have also joined this trend. Ultimately, it is the poor women of the country who are making this contribution. Is that something we should truly celebrated?

People in power and those with influence do not care so long as they can maintain their life styles. They are the real racists. the racism towards their own downtrodden people. In every country that does not develop one can find such a group of people exploiting their own people. In Sri Lanka they are called Colombians. We have malnutrition running rampant leading to a bleak future, but they do not care so long as they can live upper middle income country lifestyles using the dollars earned by the poor people like housemaids you mentioned. AKD during election mentioned with emotions the widespread malnutrition but so far one does not see any significant steps by his government to address this

Increase should not be attributed only to the domestic workers , this may be from the sources of foreign workers who are employed in different sectors , who were earlier reluctant to send money to Srilanka due to the corruption of the previous regimes.

It is a good trend. But do not forget that during our worst crisis JVP in love of the country urged people to not to remit money. However in 2016 remittances for the month of June was US$ 644 million. New job opportunities in Israel also contributed to the increase. At this rate country will end up around US$ 8 billion in 2025.
