Woman killed, another injured in hit and run

A woman was killed and another injured in a fatal accident on the High-Level Road in Galawilawatta, Homagama last night, Police said.

Investigations revealed that they had been knocked down by a van and had fallen on the road after which they had been run over by a lorry travelling on the opposite lane.

Police said they gave chase and seized the van that sped away from the scene and arrested the driver.

The deceased Siriyarachchige Sujeewa Samanthi (30) was a resident of Eheliyagoda, employed in a garment factory in Galawilawatta. She with a fellow worker was crossing the road to go to a nearby hotel to buy a packet of meal when they had met with the accident.

The two women who received serious injuries were rushed to Homagama base hospital where one of them was pronounced already dead. The other young woman in critical condition was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. (Buddhika Kumarasiri)

The Driver should be sentenced to death. Since there is no law and order in the country everyone does things the way they want.

These errant drivers must be given the maximum punishment. Our courts are too lenient and that is one of the reasons for these accidents

The negligent attitude of the traffic police makes all maniacs free to drive on the roads. Like in the USA severe punishment should be enforced on law violators....The system should be fully computerized and traffic violations must be on record and bribe taking should be declared as a major crime in the country. VALUE LIFE.

They may have been crossing the road at an undersigned place. Many Sri Lankan pedestrians just walk on the road from anywhere they think is convenient for them. Poor driver may have fled due to definete tribal punishment by the roadside bystanders who hit the drivers and burn the vehicle.

Not mentioning that the driver is not wrong. But the article does not specify whether the pedestrian crossing was used. Also Sri Lankans are famous for just running across the road when and where they are not supposed to, they don’t wait till the vehicle has actually stopped. All assume than vehicles can stop within one inch after breaking. While drivers should be educated to drive carefully, I believe that people also should be educated on how to cross roads, especially at night where visibility is also poor and not all roads are well lit.
