Wimal reveals letter alleging plot behind Nandana Gunathilaka’s death

Colombo, Jan. 22 (Daily Mirror) - Former MP Wimal Weerawansa has made a controversial disclosure over the death of former politician Nandana Gunathilaka claiming the late politician had warned of a plot against his life in a letter shared shortly before his death.

Speaking to the media at Gunathilaka’s funeral, Weerawansa said the former politician had shown him a letter addressed to an international organisation, outlining concerns about threats to his safety. He also said Gunathilaka had sent him a WhatsApp message regarding the matter.

Quoting from the letter, Weerawansa said Gunathilaka had written that what he described as the “fake, deceitful and anti-democratic conduct” of the internal JVP mechanism had been exposed by Rajapaksa Priyanjith Witharana and himself over the past year, and that, as a result, there was an alleged plot to kill them.

According to the letter, Gunathilaka had claimed that groups of assassins were targeting them and that information had been gathered on the individuals involved and the methods planned. The letter further alleged that the chosen method was to stab them in broad daylight with a sharp weapon and portray it as a personal dispute, with other methods including poisoning, staging motor accidents or presenting the death as a dispute among underworld rivals, particularly a shooting.
