Will submit report on repealing PTA in Parliament within three months: Govt. assures EU mission

Colombo, May 1 (Daily Mirror) - The government has informed the European Union (EU) GSP+ monitoring mission that the committee appointed on the repeal of the PTA will submit its report in Parliament within three months.

The assurance was given by Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath during a meeting with the visiting European Union (EU) GSP+ monitoring mission yesterday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the EU mission had commended the government of acting within a timeframe on repealing the PTA and assured technical assistance in the process if required.

We need to tread carefully! It is naive to assume that the threat of terrorism has been eliminated. We need measures in place to protect country and citizens. EU countries have them, so why shouldn’t we?

Members of the Transnational government of Tamil Elam (TGTE) in UK are still trying to get LTTE de-proscribed as a terrorist organisation! Last appeal was heard in June 2024! Must be aware of these things, and not be caught out. Important to have legislation to combat terrorism without leaving us vulnerable.

Hardly anyone who is in favor of repelling the PTA ever served in armed forces of the country and put their life at the frontline
