Colombo, January 29 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that the government will not force the farmers to sell paddy to the government, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunarathne requested the farmers to provide some amount of paddy to the government at the minimum guaranteed price.

He told reporters that the government will start purchasing paddy soon after the minimum guaranteed price is announced in a few days.

"The paddy storages are ready to purchase paddy now. We will not force farmers to sell paddy to the government. We request farmers to provide some amount of paddy to the government at the minimum guaranteed price. It is a duty of the farmers. We will not sell paddy purchased by the government at low rates but will use it to provide rice to the people at a reasonable price, less than the controlled price," he said.

If you give loans, fertilizer,provide water you the government have right to force producers to sell paddy to government,or otherwise you would have to dance to the tune of mill owners and paddy storing cartel, and certainly you won’t be able to control rice market of the country , if you fail in providing rice at most current price or less ,then people will consider you are failed ,if so , your remaining rule would be disastrous

Absolutely right. After getting benefits at the tax payers cost they have a duty to sell it back to the government. Remember any subsidy is paid by the tax payer.

Feedback to me: Farmer's reluctance to sell paddy to the government is solely for the delayed payments. Those responsible for payments have their own methods to expedite or delay to make payments.

When the Government gives free fertilizer, water and loans to the farmers, it has the right to demand farmers MUST sell their paddy to the Government. If the NPP Government does not have the courage to do so, it MUST resign.

The Government MUST force farmers to sell paddy to the Government because the Government spends taxpayers' money to supply free fertilizer, water, and some funds to farmers. If some farmers do not sell paddy to Government, it must stop giving free fertilizers, water and other allowances to those farmers.

This joker says different things in different days. Does he know some farmers are still waiting for payments for fertilizer while paddy is now ready for harvesting. He is slowly realising that he can't manipulate the free market. Equally, he is realising that his lazy bureaucrats are no match to private sector buyers, both in terms of efficiency and quality. Watch your public servants coming to work by 10am, have long tea breaks, long gossip sessions and get ready to go home by 3pm. You can wait until cows come home, they aint going to come.
