Wild elephant killed by train in Gallella

Colombo, July 18 (Daily Mirror) - A wild elephant was killed early this morning (18) after being struck by a train traveling from Colombo to Batticaloa. The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. in the Gallella area.

According to local residents, the elephant had been roaming the village since around 3 a.m. and was known for entering paddy fields in the area. Villagers said they attempted to contact the Wildlife Department when the elephant arrived, but the officials’ phone lines were reportedly disconnected at the time.

They claim the elephant had frequently visited the village in recent weeks and criticized the Wildlife Department for failing to take preventive measures. Residents believe that the tragedy could have been avoided if authorities had acted sooner.
