Colombo, July 22 (Daily Mirror) - Wild Elephant Electrocuted in Potuvil After Coming into Contact with Illegal Electric Fence

A wild elephant roaming in the Kanagarayam area in Potuvil was electrocuted after becoming entangled in a live wire illegally laid by a farmer to protect his paddy field, wildlife officials said.

The deceased elephant, a well-grown male estimated to be around 20 years old, died on the spot.

The owner of the paddy field was arrested in connection with the incident and was scheduled to be produced before the Potuvil Magistrate yesterday.

Wildlife officials further revealed that another wild elephant had been electrocuted in the Potuvil area just the day before, raising concerns over the recurring use of illegal electric fences.

The postmortem examination was conducted by Dr. Nihal Pushpakumara, Veterinary Surgeon of the Ampara Wildlife Zone.

Potuvil area is located close proximity to the Kumana national park which is under the purview of the department of wildlife. Besides this park there few isolated forest patches which are under the purview of department of forest conservation. However the wild elephants prefer roaming in the forest patches located adjacent to the paddy fields. These elephants enter the paddy fields during night time in search of fodder and other food materials. Even though it is unlawful the farmers are erecting the electric fences right round their fields in order protect from the elephants and other wildlife animals including the cattle.But the authorities concerned have not pay their attention to amend most outdated wildlife ordinance enabling the officers to prevent the farmers from erecting illegal fences
