Why did Western Province Governor fund illumination of Galle Face during Christmas, asks MP

Opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake questioned in Parliament today as to why Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof funded Christmas light displays at Galle Face and Duplication Road.
“A festival was organised for Christmas where the Galle Face was lit up.There was a drone show as well. Governor Hanif Yusoof had paid for these. Why should he pay for this programme? Hanif Yusoof must have some intention to show the government some spectacles. We have not heard of Governors spending for such things in the past," he said.
Responding to the allegation, Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake later said he was unaware as to who had paid for the Christmas decorations and festivities.
“The Governor is a reputed individual of this country. But he was not appointed to conduct business with the government. This is well known by all political parties, business leaders and the public,” he said.
Rathnayake added that it was impertinent to hurl absurd allegations against Yusoof who was not present in the House.
“If he is making these allegations he should prove them,” the Leader of the House said.
