Colombo, Feb 24 (Daily Mirror) - NPP MP Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi questioned why Members of Parliament must be scared when there are clashes among underworld gangs.

He told parliament that if MPs are scared, it proves that there are links between the underworld and politicians.

"If there is a clash among underworld gangs, why seek security for MPs? Why do MPs get scared when underwolrd gangs clash? Being a ruling party MP, I walk at the Piliyandala Junction alone. If so, I also must feel the need for security. I do not maintain connections with the underworld. If MPs get scared, it proves that politicians and the underworld have links," he said.

The MP said bycicle chain gangs used by then President J.R. Jayawardene rule to suppress July strikers in 1980, have now evolved into the present underworld.

Not a case of deciding to give protection, protection has been given to those in the govt for decades, it is the general practice. it is not that the president has set rules for politicians. Politicians have been given and now asking for more, even the scumbags who brought down the country want more security. Yohan, Public Security Minister gave security as has always been the case. You are correct. It is the general public who are at forefront of the underworld gang fighting. Imagine there was a shooting at a shop last week, public is at risk, not the MPs. The MPS do not spend time at public places. If you want to consider enhancing security, place additional security to protect larger public, not individual MPs. SLPA will press a case to increase MR security, do not bend to that. Rajapakses ruined our country - did you see how much public money they spent for the India visit by the family? No shame Namal wants to rule and fix the country. What a joke.

The NPP was against Deshabandu Uktiya operation and they released many who were arrested so they are probably protected by the underworld. The opposition MPs have been in Parliament for longer than the Govt MPs. They are addicted to a high level of pomp and ego that they cant seem to live without now. That is why they want security personal around themselves. Besides, they are uncomfortable to be among ordinary people on their own now. Its not that a few security personal around MPs would stop anything from happening as seen at the incident at the coat complex, where there was ample security. The real threat has to be addressed at the root cause.
