Whiskey, cigarettes worth over Rs. 25 Mn seized by Customs at UPB warehouse



Colombo, June 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Customs today seized 1,612 cartons of cigarettes and 10 one litfe bottles of whisky concealed inside 26 packages declared as household furniture and personal goods at the Ceylon Shipping Lines UPB warehouse in Dematagoda.  

Customs spokesman Seevali Arukgoda said the consignment containing 26 packages had arrived from Dubai addressed to a consignee named M.R.M. Razan, a resident of Thotawaththa, Panadura.

Upon examination the Customs found 10 litefe of whisky concealed inside boxes of washing powder and the cigarettes were concealed inside furniture parts specially made to hide the cigarette cartons.   

The value of the cigarettes amounts to Rs.24,180,000, whilst the value of the Whisky amounts to Rs. 180,000. 

The value of the other personal goods amounts to Rs. 728,000. 

A formal inquiry was held into the matter and the inquiring officer has forfeited the whole consignment and imposed a fine of Rs.500,000.  

Sri Lanka  Customs staff attached to the CSL UPB warehouse conducted the investigations.
