Were YouTubers informed of plan to arrest Ranil? Opposition MP questions

Colombo, August 22 (Daily Mirror) - A controversial question was raised in Parliament by Opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, who alleged that certain YouTubers may have been provided with advance information about a supposed plan to arrest former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

"A particular YouTuber posted a video claiming that former President Wickremesinghe would be arrested and remanded for 14 days," MP Dassanayake said.

"How could they have come up with such content unless they were tipped off? Has sensitive information about a plan to arrest the former President been leaked to social media influencers?" the MP asked.

The MP further accused the current NPP-led government of suppressing the rights of individuals who were instrumental in its electoral victory.

“Postal workers helped secure votes for the NPP by campaigning while distributing poll cards during the Presidential and General elections. Traffic police officers also promoted the party while issuing fines for traffic violations. School principals, teachers and even popular tuition masters joined in the campaign,” Dassanayake claimed.

He also noted a significant shift in political allegiance among plantation sector communities, saying, “Communities that had never voted for any other party before cast their votes for the NPP.”

Despite this widespread support, Dassanayake criticised the government for failing to address key issues affecting these communities and state workers.

“The government has yet to resolve longstanding grievances of postal workers. Police transfers are happening on a massive scale without transparency. Plantation workers who supported the NPP still await an increase in their daily wages,” he said.

“This is nothing short of a suppression of human rights,” MP Dassanayake charged
