Steps will have to be taken to even lockdown the country depending on the conditions and necessities in the future, Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID-19 Disease Control Minister Sudarshani Fernandopulle said.
“The decisions to impose isolation status on areas are not taken based on political interest but solely on epidemiological studies,” she told the media today.
“The areas are placed under isolation at the request of medical specialists. At the same time, we can’t also agree on isolation status imposed unnecessarily in some areas,” the State Minister underlined.
She said the Provincial Directors of Health Services had been vested with power to place respective Grama Niladhari Divisions under isolation based on requirement.
“However, the Director-General of Health Services will have to be informed of this regard,” she added.
She reiterated that they would have to lockdown the country if the need arises. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Agree. The areas are placed under isolation on the request of medical specialists but some areas are released from isolation on the request of political specialists of that area as in the case of Piliyandala.

Dr. Mrs. Fernandopulle, thank you for your service to the country. Please get rid of the two Joker's from the health ministry comming on TV. The DG health and the infectious disease " Dr' s". Please get capable people like Dr. Anil Jasinghe and not the spineless, wavering to wind bamboo sticks who seems to care only about safeguarding their jobs at the expense of the health of the population. Please see the work done by Finley institute in Cuba. They have 4 or 5 Covid vaccine candidates in trials. 2 in phase 3. The nature magazine has a good article on them. We need to make the vaccines in Sri Lanka, otherwise we are going to be in the same soup in the future. We need to get a set of young people trained in bio technology. Look how Cuba is doing. May be a model for our country

4000 patients are without hospital beds and are in their respective homes, probably waiting for their final call without receiving treatment. Hence the need is already there for a complete lockdown. without such action, the pandemic won't just go away. The longer we wait the higher the risk of becoming another India or Brasil!!

It has been obvious for some time that if we are to avoid India and Nepals fate and ensure that the health system is not overwhelmed that a lockdown imperative. Instead piecemeal measures in slow motion and prevarication despite clear guidance from health professionals. Why trust the same people who peddled syrup as the solution? Lockdown now.

Locking down the country is the easiest option. But it will bring about the worst economic impact to already reeling economy. Most who wrote comments here I presume might not be even living in SL... Closing the county done even for a week will impact the daily wage earners, shop owners and even self employed. Government employees will anyway get their income even if the county is closed for eternity!!!
