Colombo, Jan. 15 (Daily Mirror)- Steps will be taken to introduce a pricing formula for water tariffs so as to reduce the water tariffs in line with the electricity tariff reduction, Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Minister Jeevan Thondaman said.

The Minister said the pricing formula will be formulated in consultation with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and the advisers of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

He said during a meeting at the Peradeniya University that the Power and Energy Minister had assured that the electricity tariff will be reduced next month and added that the water tariff too could be reduced in line with that as the cost of water supply will decrease with the reduction in energy costs.

He said the water tariff was increased in January, 2019 when the electricity tariff was increased by 66 percent and added that the water tariff could be reduced by a considerable amount when the electricity tariff is reduced by 50 percent.

Does this means increases of the order of 200% to 300% and decreases of 3.3% as was done recently with the electricity tariffs. People cannot be deceived by this type of hoodwinking. Wait until the elections to show you a real reduction.

Why not give a pleasant surprise to citizens? Monday, 15 January 2024 04:56 PM

Let the Electricity charges come down first, then you can talk of water tariff! Why don't you reduce the rate as a surprise to citizens?

Another election gundu for gullible citizens in your country to just win the people's votes. After winning the elections, the tariffs will go skyrocketing again. What a joke?

If it's going to be 3% like the electricity bill then keep it for yourself.

When will actual e-billing come into effect? Meter reader comes and gives a small piece of paper as the bill and the next day it is sent to your email and you can pay the amount online. Sending the bill to an email address doesnt mean e-billing!!!

Jeevan started his ministry as a humble man with innovative progressive ideas. But his head (as happens to all Sri Lankan politicians) swelled with the grandeur of his perceived self importance, and a promising career has gone down the drain.
