Watagala sends letter of demand to Namal

Colombo, Sept. 26 (Daily Mirror) - Deputy Minister of Public Security, Sunil Watagala, has sent a letter of demand seeking Rs. 2 billion in compensation from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa.

The letter, dated September 22, 2025, was sent by Attorney Manjula Balasuriya on the instructions of Deputy Minister Watagala. It comes in response to a previous letter dated September 10, 2025, in which Attorney Sankha Karunaratne, acting on behalf of MP Rajapaksa, demanded Rs. 1 billion in compensation from Watagala.

In the initial letter, Attorney Karunaratne alleged that a statement made by Sunil Watagala during a media discussion had damaged Namal Rajapaksa’s reputation.

In reply, Watagala’s legal counsel asserted that no defamatory statement had been made. The response further stated that Rajapaksa is not a person of reputable standing, noting that the Attorney General has already filed indictments against him over the alleged misuse of Rs. 70 million in the Krish transaction.

Therefore, it was argued that no statement made could have harmed his reputation, and the letter of demand dated September 10, 2025, was formally rejected.

Watagala's legal team also stated that should legal proceedings be initiated, a counterclaim would be filed, and the matter would proceed with cross-demands. All legal costs arising from the proceedings would be sought from Namal Rajapaksa through the court.
