’Wall of death’ claims life of child

A one-year and 11-month-old female child died yesterday after falling from the steps of a 'Wall of death' during a carnival at the Dambagalla Pradeshiya Sabha grounds, Police said.

The victim child was a resident of the Kahatagasdigiliya area and the daughter of the truck driver, who is also the owner of the Wall of Death. The child fell when she was climbing the wall.

Police said child's father was decorating the Wall of Death before the show began when she had tried to climb it.

After falling, the child was admitted to the Moneragala hospital, from where she was transferred to the Badulla hospital for further treatment. Later, the child had died while receiving treatment.

The body of the child was handed over to the parents and Dambagalla police are conducting further investigations. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

On the one hand, children in Sri Lanka are allowed to do everything. Toddlers sleep in their parents' beds, babies are dragged along to parties or to pubs late at night, children are chauffeured to school, 15-year-olds are prepared their school sandwiches and even 30-year-olds are fed at home if they don't have a job or are too lazy to work. On the other hand, the parents do not fulfill their duty of care, so that they fall into wells, rivers or from walls.

Just a few children are neglected while most of the parents take care their children with lot of care. We enjoy spending time with children and grand children unlike in other countries they just throw them away and finally they go to school with guns every other week and go killing spree. We have an excellent culture most of the people in other countries jealous about.

Which countries do you mean exactly? Because European countries are far more safe and comfortable to grow up than Sri Lanka. And children are " thrown away" in Sri Lanka and adopted in Europe. Have you heard about the babyfarms in the ' 80s in Sri Lanka? We heard about it. Also about the childsoldiers during your civil war.

Don’t display your absolute ignorance of what happens in other countries basing it on a few i isolated incidents you hear in the media. These countries have many times our population. If culture is so good how do you explain the high the rates of murder, rape. Bribery and corruption in the country. Majority of parents universally do the right thing .

Very sad. Children of this age group will always move about here and there. Special attention is needed on children of this age group as they will never stay at one place
