WFP food aid found rotting in Veyangoda, Food Commissioner’s Dept. yet to decide on further action

Colombo, Feb 03 (Daily Mirror) - The Food Commissioner's Department is expecting a decision from the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Ministry to take further action on the stock of 1,623 metric tonnes of food items found rotting in a warehouse in Veyangoda, Food Commissioner Upul Shantha de Alwis said.

He said a stock of 1,623 metric tonnes of food items such as rice, dhal and oil stored in a warehouse in Veyangoda since 2022 were found to be unfit for human consumption following food quality tests performed by the Government Analyst's Department and the Health Ministry.

The Food Commissioner said 103 warehouses maintained by the Food Commissioner's Department were rented out to some institutions such as Sathosa, STC and the Customs Department for storage facilities and said that a warehouse in Veyangoda had been provided to store food donated by the World Food Programme.

He said samples of 1,623 metric tonnes of food items were sent to the Government Analyst Department and the Health Ministry for quality testing after recommendations during a discussion at the Presidential Secretariat in October 2024 to issue the stock of food items to the people.

He said quality testing on the food stock revealed that they were not fit for human consumption and added that the Department is awaiting the decision of the World Food Programme and the Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Ministry to take further action on the food stock.
