Vote on Colombo Mayor: Some members may change at last minute: SJB MP

Colombo, June 15 (Daily Mirror) - It is not possible to predict who will be elected as the Mayor of Colombo tomorrow because some members may change their stance at the last moment, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP S.M. Marikar said today.

"The 29 members of the SJB are reliable, but the issue is with others, including the independent groups," Marikar told a media briefing.

"Some of the Sarwajana Balaya members have taken a unilateral decision to support the NPP in some local bodies," he also recalled.

Also, he said the success of the SJB members who confered with other parties will be seen from the results of tomorrow's vote.

Quoting the local government law, the MP said the members of a council have to decide whether the vote to elect a mayor should be a secret ballot or an open ballot. The vote to decide whether there will be a secret ballot or an open ballot has to be a 'vote by name,' he said.

Markkar believes that the SJB will be losing the Mayarol seat. So he is saying some members will change last minute. Yes they will change and elect a Member of their choice and sadly not a Member of Marikkar's choice. In my mind SJB

The Sarvajana Balaya is a by-product of the SLPP and the latter is the saviour of NPP by indirectly delivering an overwhelming votes to the NPP thro frustration with the SLPP although at present gradually coming back to them and most of the independent members elected are more inclined to support the NPP and the best thing left to the SJB is not to align with these groups if they want to survive as a major party even at the expense of capturing power of local councils with the support of these strange bedfellows.

The opposition parliamentarians like Marikkar Mujiber are entangled in a tug of war Marikkar is up against Mujiber. Mujiber has wanted to see his man swearing as the mayor. Tomorrow morning the mayor will be selected by either a secret vote or open vote from the already elected members. Whatsoever the NPP is leading with 48 seats the SJB is trailing behind. Those who voted for SJB specially , should think twice about the leader and the policies of their party. They were against the policies of SLPP and criticize of their governess which led to the economic destruction of this country. They want to bring back money stolen by former SLPP regime. Now both parties are fighting together to grab power of Colombo MCC. Sajith is cutting his own grave which will definitely put him out from the presidential race in 2029.

The NPP should be allowed to win without any opposition. This once again will be a litmus test on the capability of JVP/NPP. Its not as if NPP has done a great job so far and the new mayoral candidate is unknown and unproved. Its also high time for the SJB to realize that everyne is not in love with them. So, let's wait and see. After all, its only the day to day lives of those living in Colombo that are involved; and up to now, no one cares about that.
