’’Visumpaya”, official residence of several state leaders, to become Boutique Hotel

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has planned to convert "Visumpaya", which has been used as the official residence of several state leaders such as Sirimavo Bandaranaike and D.M. Jayaratne, into a Boutique Hotel.

An MoU for this was signed between the UDA and Azotels Hospitality Limited recently.

The "Visumpaya" building has been handed over to the Azotels Hospitality Limited on a 50-year lease agreement and Azotels Hospitality Limited, Hunas Holdings PLC and a Japanese affiliated Consortium will convert this into a luxury hotel.

This building has been constructed at Union Place, Colombo in 1835 during the colonial period. It has been leased out under the project initiated by Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to lease out lands and buildings with historical value for investments under Public Private Partnerships (PPP).

Former leaders Sirimavo Bandaranaike, D.M. Jayaratne, Anurudda Ratwatte, Lakshman Kadirgamar, Mangala Samaraweera and Prof. G.L. Peiris used "Visumpaya" as their official residences. (Ajith Siriwardana)
