Colombo, March 28 (Daily Mirror) - The Colombo Chief Magistrate today ordered to release former Convenor of Inter University Bhikku Federation (IUBF) Ven. Galwewa Siridhamma Thera from a case filed for allegedly committing offences under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) during the Aragalaya protests in 2022.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis made this order considering the insufficient evidence against the suspect for charges under the PTA.

Ven. Siridhamma Thera was produced before court on November 23, 2022 after being detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for 89 days.

On a previous occasion, former Convenor of Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) Wasantha Mudalige was also released from the case filed against him over similar allegations. He was ordered to be released from the case after spending five months in prison.

Two student activists were detained under the PTA for 90 days under Detention Orders issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Defence.

Isn't there a method for those jailed incorrectly without sufficient evidence to be compensated by those same authorities who fix false charges and jail them. Staying in jail for long periods is not fair for innocents.

No method to compensate but they can seek compensation. The weakness in our law enforcement is that they the Police arrest or AG direct them to arrest on suspicion with no credible evidence and the cases fail.

They have already served prison sentences despite not being guilty of any crime.

Sue those who carried out the illegal arrests and causing immense suffering to these legitimate protestors. Srilanka’s have been victimised by these monsters who are in charge of the government

Seek compensation for illegal arrest. Can our lawyers help on this please.

People…wake up. Until this is done to your family members you would not realise the danger of these draconian laws. First defeat all in government by voting against them. RW is a fox in sheep’s clothing.
