Colombo, Jan 17 (Daily Mirror) - Despite forecasts predicting a decrease in vegetable prices after the festive season, the actual prices have remained high. Most vegetable varieties are now priced at over Rs. 1,000 per kilo, with carrots and beans reaching the highest levels, surpassing Rs. 1,200 per kilo.

Yesterday, the country witnessed its highest recorded vegetable price, with a kilo of carrots reaching Rs. 1,400 at the New Manning Market in Peliyagoda.

The escalating prices have led to a decline in vegetable consumption, as many consumers express their inability to afford them at these prices.

People report that the prices of nearly all vegetable varieties have increased, creating significant financial challenges for consumers.

The current market prices reveal that beans are priced at Rs. 1,000 per kilo. However, there have been fluctuations in the prices of other vegetables, with green chillies and tomatoes decreasing to Rs. 800 and Rs. 350 per kilo respectively. On the other hand, the cost of lime has seen an increase, reaching Rs. 500 per kilo.

Meanwhile, the business community running tourist hotels and guest houses across the country expressed concern about the high prices of vegetables that has affected the industry.

Traders in Nuwara Eliya's Dedicated Economic Centre said the prices of vegetables had sky rocketed and that it resulted in a sharp drop in purchases. They pointed out that the price of carrot was Rs.2000 a kilo, cabbage Rs.680, leeks Rs. 500, capsicum Rs.650, tomatoes Rs. 800, beetroot, Rs.500, broccoli, a variety in demand among foreign tourists, Rs.3600, basil Rs. 2600, cauliflower Rs.,1300.

Meanwhile many customers said it is with great difficulty that they manage to have one vegetable curry for a meal. They pointed out that the price hike in the retail market was unprecedented and that the vegetables available were of poor quality.

    Jude Wednesday, 17 January 2024 08:37 AM

Only voters can make the change happen by voting NPP and that's the only hope!!! People, don't listen to the past!! Remember most NPP members were Born after 1987 and 1989. So much smart people in SL but NEVER Made the smart move when it comes to electing MP's and President yeah!!

One result of Ranil's failed economic policy is the high vegetable prices, which not only affect families but entire industries. Although the weather is partly to blame, the main blame lies with the Ranil regime, which is unable to implement a sensible agricultural policy.

Neel Madagedara Wednesday, 17 January 2024 12:42 PM

Yes, its worthy mention not only Ranil fail system but also our Amaraweera Useless minister's blunders regarding the our farmers facilities that granted to the local farmers.

Citizens failed themselves Wednesday, 17 January 2024 05:39 PM

Neal Medagedara is the only one who identified Mahinda Amaraweera as culprit for woes of farmers. I will blame every citizen for the debacle. Why can't we plant what ever we can at home? Green Chiilies @ Rs.2,000/- Tomatoe @ 600/- Beans @ Rs.1000- Plant them in pots, you feed the demand, save money. At least those living in their own home can do it. Amaraweera failed to provide fertilizer and seeds for home garden growers through department.

Sri Lankan local produce have no limits better to get from Vietnam Thailand Malaysia with government tax reform introduced to help majority citizens who are middle-class and poor families to provid at least some decent meal or two with Rice

Vegetable Analysis Wednesday, 17 January 2024 11:55 AM

As last few months sunlight was extremely less, upcountry vegetable crops have reduced heavily and the vegetables you see are very small. However, the farmers are not getting that much of the increase price, as at the wholesale market, these small vegetables are called souping vegetables and for example souping carrot they pay like only Rs. 200 a kilo. If vegetables are normal size only farmers will get a good price, and these days your vegetable crop is not normal size.

Many people people curse Ranil -Rajapkshes - Nndhalal government for each and every problem. Don't forget we are living in peace because of Rajapkshes. No problem even if we starve, this is our land.

Unfortunately, we will always have idiots like you in SL.

So what’s the reason this time? Vat! Tin! Get real. The hopper stall which does not pay any taxes and buys eggs from Sathosa by the cases @ 35/- each still charge 140/- for an egg hopper. And we foolish people keep buying and blame the government. Same with 3 wheeler drivers- the petrol increase of 20/- per liter was passed on to the customer @20/- per km. 3 wheeler with V8 engine maybe? (Mind you a luxury SUV with V8 engine still does around 4 km per liter)

Sri Kantha Wednesday, 17 January 2024 01:26 PM

Government has to be blamed for this debacle. But also blame the people of Srilanka not wanting work harder, intelligently or embrace change. How difficult is it to grow beans?

    Sokrates Wednesday, 17 January 2024 03:29 PM

@ Vegetable Analysis. It is common for the well-paid harvesters who work for the buyers to be bribed by the farmers and to put secretly small and partly rotten vegetables in the middle of the sacks. This also leads to an increase in prices. Corruption occurs in all areas of this country and is the greatest evil.

    DOT Wednesday, 17 January 2024 03:40 PM

This is very tempararaly situation may be due to bad weather. Please do not import!

Joceln Al Adwani Friday, 19 January 2024 02:11 PM

The prices are crazy and far in excess of vegetable prices in Europe. How are disadvantaged people expected to eat with these crazy prices ? running a business is extremely difficult in these times. The government needs to control the prices and subsidise if needed.
