Colombo, August 4 (Daily Mirror) - The government must remain firmly committed to good governance and transparency or it risks losing its credibility with the international creditors including the Paris Club of creditors, Jaffna District Organizer of SLPP and Politburo member, Geethanath Cassilingam said.
Cassilingam said that while one of the conditions of the international creditors was upholding good governance in Sri Lanka, any deviation from this risks undermining the hard-won trust of the creditors and even the international investors who could reconsider their support for Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring.
He said President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had won a majority at the Presidential Election by pledging these key issues. However just within 10 months, independent organizations were being politicized, youth were being suppressed from voicing the truth and the govt was entering into agreements with foreign partners, the terms and conditions which were being withheld from the public.
“This is not what the public voted for,” Cassilingam said and called on the government to act with responsibility rather than undermining its own credibility.
He further said that compromising on good governance would also hamper all efforts to regain the GSP plus facility with the EU and he called on the government to prioritize the country’s economy.
