Colombo, Sept. 30 (Daily Mirror) - University lecturers across the country have launched a one-day strike today, citing the government’s failure to address ongoing problems in the higher education sector.
The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) said the protest aims to push the government to take immediate action.
FUTA Secretary and Senior Lecturer Charudath Ilangasinghe said the government has repeatedly ignored key issues affecting the university system, forcing academic staff to resort to trade union action.
He added that nearly 12,000 lecturers are needed to run the system, but currently only around 5,000 are in service. He also noted that last year, 200 lecturers resigned from the University of Peradeniya.
Lecturers from all state universities suspended academic work for the day, affecting lectures and other activities.
