University lecturer dies in car accident at Kohuwala

Colombo, March 09 (Daily Mirror) - A 59-year-old senior lecturer at the University of Colombo, Dr. Janaki D. Jayawardena died tragically in a motor accident in Kohuwala.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Friday when the victim’s son attempted to restart a car that had been parked due to a technical fault.

Dr. Jayawardena and her daughter-in-law were present as her son tried to start the vehicle, which was parked near a house on Jayasumanarama Road.

As the son attempted to start the car, the lecturer and her daughter-in-law were in the process of removing stones placed in front of the vehicle to prevent it from rolling.

However, the car’s brakes failed, and it moved forward, knocking down Dr. Jayawardena. The vehicle, parked on a slope reportedly ran over her.

Dr. Jayawardena was rushed to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Investigations revealed that after the stone had been removed, she was unable to move away in time.

Kohuwala Police are continuing investigations into the incident.

A university lecturer with no common sense. I live near a state university and the behaviour of the majority of the students using the public roads is an indication to the level of education that is being served.

Although some accidents are unavoidable, this sounds completely avoidable. Why go in front of a vehicle that is parked on a slope while someone is trying to start it? The stones could have been removed from the sides and stayed clear of the vehicle. It sounds like they were trying to jumpstart the car using the slope and the son didn't press the brake hard enough without power steering active. I guess safety comes second to many people here.

SOME WOULD SAY SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN REMOVING STONES WHILE THE SON WAS TRYING TO JUMP START THE VEHICLE, OTHERS WILL SAY THE SON SHOULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL THE MOTHER MOVED AWAY BEFORE STARTING THE CAR JUMP START OR OTHERWISE. IT IS SAD THAT THIS ACCIDENT HAS TAKEN PLACE, AN ACCIDENT WHICH COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN AVOIDED IF BOTH AND OR EITHER ONE USED COMMON SENSE.

I’m not a fatalistic person but some time we try to rationalise every human action : I’m sorry to read this news but sometime something happens beyond our control: we have a common sense and we take all precautions but yet something like this could happen unknowingly: yes her son has done this by mistake but we can’t blame him entirely . Did he do it intentionally not at all. Did she do it intentionally? Did she expect that would happen on this bad time in this way . We may to try to give many logical explanations but many things like this take place without our control ? You may call it as God did it ? You may Call it some power did it? You may call that some Jinn did it You may call that some supernatural things did it? But there is something beyond our power and control ? May her soul rest in peace

This is one of the worst things that could happen to someone , to cause the death of someone you love specifically a parent. Very tragic indeed, can't imagine how the son will recover from this tragedy. He will need a lot of counselling and moral support but still it would take a long time.

What a tragic loss! Also very disturbing to read the comments of people who choose this time to mock and blame the deceased and the survivors or an accident. I cannot fathom the lack of humanity that makes people feel it is a suitable comment at a time of death. As though we are all above human error and fate.
