The United States has formally notified UNESCO of its decision to withdraw from the organization, citing a misalignment with U.S. national interests and foreign policy priorities.
The announcement was made today to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. In a statement, U.S. officials criticized the agency for promoting what they described as "divisive social and cultural causes" and for placing undue emphasis on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals — which they referred to as part of a “globalist, ideological agenda” incompatible with the current U.S. approach to foreign policy.
Among the reasons cited for the withdrawal was UNESCO’s 2011 decision to admit the “State of Palestine” as a full member. The U.S. said this move contradicted its policy and contributed to what it views as anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization.
“Continued U.S. participation in international organizations will focus on advancing American interests with clarity and conviction,” the statement added.
Under Article II(6) of the UNESCO Constitution, the U.S. withdrawal will officially take effect on December 31, 2026. Until then, the United States will remain a full member of the organization.
