Colombo, August 31 (Daily Mirror) - Nearly half of the land belonging to the Kandy National Hospital has been encroached upon by unauthorized settlers, posing a serious obstacle to the hospital’s development, Director Dr. Iresha Fernando revealed.
Out of the 58 acres allocated to the hospital, 28 acres are currently occupied, with houses, shops, and other unauthorized structures continuing to be built. Dr. Fernando warned that the encroachment is severely hampering the hospital’s ability to expand its services.
The Kandy National Hospital, the country’s second-largest national hospital and a major teaching institution, operates 80 wards, 11 intensive care units, and several other specialized treatment units.
Thousands of patients from across the island arrive daily for medical care.
Dr. Fernando emphasized that the hospital has significant potential for further development to meet the growing demand. However, unauthorized occupation of its land has prevented much-needed expansion, creating long-term challenges for healthcare delivery.
