USAID allegedly funded controversial NGOs in Sri Lanka, claims BBS General Secretary

Colombo, Feb 27 (Daily Mirror) - Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara alleged the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had funded controversial seven NGOs.

Addressing the media, he said he is in possession of documentary evidence to substantiate his allegation.

He stated that USAID had provided Rs. 8.1 million (Rs. 8,153,705) to an organization between October 1, 2013, and July 31, 2014, allegedly to suppress the rights of Sinhala Buddhist forces.

Additionally, he mentioned a fixed obligation grant of Rs. 5,979,940 to another organization for the period between August 15, 2013, and August 14, 2014.

Gnanasara claimed that the second was funded to increase polarization between ethnic and religious groups, with activities allegedly aimed at marginalizing the BBS.

“These NGOs have been operating in twelve districts. The funds were used to create YouTube channels, publish articles in newspapers, influence judges and lawyers, and manipulate the legal system to serve their agenda,” he alleged.

The BBS has urged the current government to investigate these claims. Gnanasara further claimed that certain courts were established and infrastructure was developed using USAID funds.

“As a result, legal action was taken against me when I attempted to expose this information,” he said.

He urged the incumbent government to form a commission or a special committee to investigate the matter and reveal the truth to the nation. “I have no objection to being imprisoned if it means these issues will be resolved,” he said.
