Colombo, Jan. 25 (Daily Mirror)- The United States remains concerned over the potential impact of Sri Lanka’s Online Safety Bill, which was passed yesterday without incorporating important inputs from key stakeholders, including civil society and tech companies who say that this legislation threatens freedom of expression, innovation and privacy, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung said.

"In addition to jeopardizing democratic values, vague and overly restrictive legislation can hinder investments and the development of a digital economy, undermining the economic growth that Sri Lanka needs. The US urges Sri Lanka to prioritize transparency and ensure any legislation does not stifle the voices of its people," she tweeted.

Late night call when bunch of robbers who are struggling, rob freedom of expression. How much ammendments satisfy the requests of Tech. Cos and activits? How hacktivists play around? all may act for another number of days and elections by November around the world enormously tentative.

Mohamed Ghouse Thursday, 25 January 2024 06:03 PM

Don't talk about human rights anymore. We have seen your moral bankruptcy these days. You just care about your illegitimate child Israel only. All others are not human beings to you.

    European Thursday, 25 January 2024 10:59 PM

Please read the interview with the Russian ambassador too. Why are you not respond to that? Speaking of moral bankruptcy.

    Jude Thursday, 25 January 2024 07:01 PM

    Stop funding this government., period!

Tissa Fernando Thursday, 25 January 2024 07:35 PM

a law that has been passed without considering the facts mentioned by the Courts is no law in this country. And to know, that this law has been passed by a bunch of idiots is so saddening. USA should note that we have useless fellows in that parliament. Also, we have a speaker who will sign anything given by SLPP as he is a stooge of that Rajapkashe party

    Ryan Friday, 26 January 2024 01:26 AM

Julie Chung has expressed only the concern. A do nothing ambassador playing safe with the government as well as with the public. Just see Khashogi murder in Turkey allegedly by Saudi Royal family USA did nothing.

    Dan Friday, 26 January 2024 01:27 AM

If USA is really serious, the US ambassador has the clout to do much more than issuing mere statements. We the Sri Lankan citizens await action from the US and the West.

    Gune Friday, 26 January 2024 07:20 AM

Then why are you funding and supporting this lawless country? Isn't USA providing a lot of money to this corrupt country? Instead USA should use that money to uplift lives of struggling millions in America itself. Go to New Oleans, areas of Chicago and many other places. Spend this money on your own people, rather than helping a heavily rotten country.

Paul Hartington Friday, 26 January 2024 01:41 PM

Most aid packages are legal avenues for bribing the respective ministers. That is why monitoring of its dispersal is cursory at best.
