US-Sri Lanka partnership - Counter-terrorism a top priority: Jonathan Henick

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Jonathan Henick told a group of journalists at American Centre yesterday that counter-terrorism was one of the top priorities of his country’s partnership with Sri Lanka.

He said the threat from terrorism in the region was very serious and was not a problem that would go away soon.

When asked about Sri Lanka’s unique positioning in the Indo-pacific region, he said, “Historically, we had deep and close partnership with Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is Asia’s oldest democracy. We see Sri Lanka as one of our most important partners. Of course, we have other partners the region. We are open to working with any country in the region that shares our interest in promoting stability, maritime security, and freedom of navigation. We are interested in transparent procurement process, open and fair markets,” (Kelum Bandara)

As an Indian I feel angered by the stupid statement coming from the American that Sri Lanka is the oldest democracy in Asia. What about India, which is actually not only the oldest democracy in Asia but also the biggest democracy in the world, which is also an emerging military superpower that will rival the Americans within the next ten years.
