Colombo, April 24 (Daily Mirror) - Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe today questioned the claim made by the government on a successful deliberation with the US on the Reciprocal tariff on imports.
"The government is claiming that it has been successful in convincing the US to change its stance on the Reciprocal tariff. How can this be? The USA is yet to complete its deliberations with China and the larger nations. It will focus on larger nations initially. They will focus on smaller nations later," he said during a meeting in Kandy.

RW knows about these matters. He knows how the negotiations work. During his negotiations with the IMF (and more importantly with the creditors because IMF was just a mediator) he didn’t make these statements prematurely. At the moment no one knows where the tussle between USA and China going to end up and there’s very little that a small nation like ours can do. AKD keeps showing his immaturity and is making a fool of himself like in his 21st April announcement. AKD better concentrates on domestic matters like the immediate law and order issue faced by the nation. That’s more within the capabilities of him.

When reading some of the comments in this thread, you really have to wonder – what universe are they from? Can anyone point to a single thing this government has done right since assuming power last year? They can’t even organise a proper religious event. RW took over the country in 2022 when the country was bankrupt. He brought the country back to some normalcy when all others are trying best to sabotage his efforts by doing aragala and strikes. He didn’t even have his own government. Mahinda and basil were trying to pull his legs too. He didn’t have many qualified ministers except few guys like Sabri, Kanchana, Shenan Semasinghe to name a few. Yet single handedly, he managed to get the IMF program running, brought the GDP from -7.3% to 5% (Worl Bank data), Inflation from 70% to 1.5%, Nonexistent Tourism to 2mil tourists per year. Only issue he has is, he don’t know how to talk well like AKD, smooth talks like Mahinda. But for running the economy, there is no one remotely close to him in knowledge, experience and capabilities

The automatic choice, Ranil, after the Gota debacle, was better than that Peduru party guy. Douglas, similar to ASP, was the better option at the time, yes. Anyway, it was a personal milestone for RW, who had that cat's grin, long waiting to be president in his lifetime of politics.
