US Ambassador discusses upcoming elections with EC officials

Colombo, May 29 - US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, held a meeting with R.M.A.L. Rathnayake, Chairman of the Election Commission to discuss the forthcoming elections in Sri Lanka.

During the meeting, Ambassador Chung raised concerns regarding the conduct of the elections and sought clarity on several issues.

Following the discussion, Ambassador Chung shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the dialogue focused on the significance of free and fair elections as a cornerstone of democratic governance. She emphasized the shared commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

Chairman Rathnayake assured Ambassador Chung that the elections will be conducted in accordance with the constitutional powers vested in the Election Commission. He reiterated the Commission's dedication to ensuring a transparent and impartial election process.

No we can’t even meet a state secretary. And it’s illegal to interfere matters of national interest. Having retired as an ambassador. We were not even allowed to meet the secretary. Also for such acts need permission from foreign ministry of Sri Lanka.

SL has limited status in the world. Only those in Security Council of UN have good status, all other countries, like Sri Lanka lower status. With Sri Lanka being a bankrupt country and doing mad things, like protest about book burning in UN, it is considered 3rd rate nation. That doesn't mean people of Sri Lanka are lowly, no the country and it's accepted culture are no good.

Why are they meddling with a local elections. Who are they to have a meeting with? Will the election commission have a discussion with all ambassadors individually? It’s unacceptable and must not be encouraged at all. Will the SL ambassador in US have a discussion with their Election Commission during the upcoming US elections ?

What is Sri Lanka to think it is equal in any way to the US. It is unequal in the UN, and everywhere else. US is security council member, so is higher status than country like Sri Lanka. If SL Ambassador wants to meet with US officials he can put out invitation. On the other hand Sri Lanka election officials have failed to hold LG elections due to interference of Parliament and President, and seeking remedy for it anyway possible. Supreme court has already been ignored as useless decision maker by Parliament and President when it demanded for elections according to law.

This is what happens when a nation get into the level where we are today. This happens in countries such as in Afghanistan, Sudan etc. where there is no rule of law, corrupted and relay on the US funding to elections and other. We are not far off them, unfortunately. Expect more to come.
