UNP seniors participate in Sajith’s birthday celebration

Colombo, Jan. 12 (Daily Mirror) - Senior members of the United National Party (UNP), including Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene and National Organiser Sagala Ratnayake, participated in a religious ceremony held at the Gangarama Temple in Hunupitiya to mark the birthday of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today, indicating that a political alliance between the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) may be on the cards.

This development was confirmed by UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala, who revealed that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has put forward a proposal for the two parties to work together.

“Our party leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed the appointment of a joint coordinating committee comprising members of the UNP and the SJB to look into matters relating to members of Local Government bodies of both parties,” Ms. Athukorala said.

“He has also proposed that the leadership of the UNP and the SJB work together to resolve issues faced by Local Government representatives. In addition, a joint committee comprising working committee members from both parties has been proposed. Initially, both parties are expected to function according to this mechanism. Both parties will come together at the right time,” she added.

When asked whether the UNP and the SJB would contest future elections together, Ms. Athukorala said it was a possibility.

She also commented on recent developments related to the Grade Six education module, stating that the inclusion of certain content could not be dismissed as a mere mistake.

“The inclusion of certain matters in the new module could be a deliberate act and cannot simply be termed an error,” she said.

Furthermore, Ms. Athukorala questioned Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne’s decision to reject the Opposition’s request to appoint a select committee to examine transfers and promotions of judicial officers.

“Did the Speaker study the rulings given by his predecessors, such as Anura Bandaranaike and Chamal Rajapaksa, who upheld the supremacy of the legislature? Did he seek the advice of the Parliamentary Secretariat, as is the established tradition?” she asked.
