Colombo, May 29 (Daily Mirror) - The United National Party (UNP) is to get a new look with new faces coming into some positions soon, Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe announced today.

“The campaign for the recently concluded Local Government elections was handled by a committee. This committee comprises Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene, Assistant Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, Deputy Chairman Navin Dissanayake and General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala. I have entrusted the task of revamping the UNP to this same committee. They will create a new look UNP,” Wickremesinghe told a gathering at party headquarters Sirikotha where newly elected UNP members of local bodies were sworn in.

“A revamp of the party is needed as new people should come in to steer the party,” he added.

UNP as a political party has made huge contributions to the progress of our country although some people are trivialising this. Every period they were in power (1947-1956, 1965-1970, 1977-1984, 2001-2004, 20015-2020 and RW’s short tenure of 2022-2024) they introduced many progressive but not necessarily popular policies. After taking over broken economies from their predecessors they fixed them based on their centre right ideology. All these fixes were not necessarily popular and oppositions made use of them to offer populist policies that won voters once again but those policies were not sustainable for the same reason - being populist! Now it’s time we need them once again. So reforming the party has become very important and critical at this juncture.
