UNP calls for unity in opposition at local bodies where they hold majority collectively

United National Party (UNP) Chairman Wajira Abeywardena said that all the opposition parties should act in unison at the local authorities where they collectively hold majority.

Delivering remarks at meeting after the election results were announced, he said political unity among various parties were a novelty in 1992, 1993 and 1994, but former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga took steps to form a broad alliance at that time  against the then government.

“People have conveyed a message to the government. The message is even serious in the north and the east. In most local bodies, the ruling party has failed to secure an absolute majority. The opposition, if united, holds a clear majority,” he said.

Asserting that any party should be prepared to cope up with electoral setbacks, he said people often act to vote out any government whenever it fails to live up promises made.  He said the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should take note of public opinion expressed through the results of this election.

“This is the end result of   a government that hoodwinked the public for capturing power,” he said.

He said that a crisis would befall the country, as he said earlike, by the end of this year.
