UGC to provide two degrees next year: Chairman

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to offer two degrees for the first time in university history to the students who join the faculties of arts at the universities next year.

Addressing the media UGC chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunga said, in addition to the arts degree, students would also have the opportunity to obtain a degree in technology and computer science.

He said the government had made all arrangements and investments by building relevant laboratories and providing relevant technology to complete the requirements relating to technology and computer science.

By last year, the government had spent Rs.400 million to provide the above facilities.

He said presently the unemployment situation is on the rise due to the passing out of a large number of students from a single stream.

"The world is moving with the latest technology, and the university system should also follow accordingly. Consequently, the UGC had decided to offer two degrees, including technology and computer science, along with the arts degree," Prof. Amaratunga further added.
