Two arrested at BIA with Rs. 100 million worth of mobile phones

Colombo, August 27 (Daily Mirror) - Two Sri Lankan passengers attempting to smuggle a consignment of mobile phones worth Rs. 100 million into the country were arrested this morning (27) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) Green Channel.

The arrests were made by officers of the Customs Narcotics Control Division. Investigations revealed that the phones had been brought into the country without the required approval from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL).

The suspects, aged 24 and 32, are residents of the Grandpass area in Colombo. One is a businessman while the other is employed as a factory supervisor.

They had arrived on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-226 from Dubai at around 7.00 a.m. today. Customs officials discovered 955 mobile phones concealed in three pieces of luggage.

Both suspects have been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway.
