Two arrested at BIA with Rs. 100 million worth of mobile phones

Colombo, August 27 (Daily Mirror) - Two Sri Lankan passengers attempting to smuggle a consignment of mobile phones worth Rs. 100 million into the country were arrested this morning (27) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) Green Channel.

The arrests were made by officers of the Customs Narcotics Control Division. Investigations revealed that the phones had been brought into the country without the required approval from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL).

The suspects, aged 24 and 32, are residents of the Grandpass area in Colombo. One is a businessman while the other is employed as a factory supervisor.

They had arrived on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-226 from Dubai at around 7.00 a.m. today. Customs officials discovered 955 mobile phones concealed in three pieces of luggage.

Both suspects have been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway.

This shows something is not right here. There must be a set at customs individuals who gives the green signal for them to bring the goods . At last minute changes in the customs deployment things must be going wrong. If we have a honest 24 hr red alert team non will try to do any attempts like this.

This can be done only collaboration with custom officers ,crooks must have strong understanding with duty officers at that time and they certainly have past experience as well,overhaulings of custom department is necessity now

This is precisely the culture that we have unfortunately in this country - people going abroad and bringing items beyond household limits / private needs - and then using them for the pop up businesses that they run online etc. They in turn don't declare the profit nor pay tax and everything goes into their pockets. And one wonders why our country is in the state that it is in, where people are living lifestyles beyond their declared income/revenue. Such individuals needs to be met with the full force of the law for attempted smuggling of such goods.

Do not destroy , but sell through Sathosa at retail price. But it appears that the culprits will get back the goods after paying a nominal fine and some kappan to Pachawatte office.

Technology is the to stop registering unauthorized phones to networks. It also helps to catch phone theft as well.

How can one carry such a load of goods through customs without being detected. Do they think the custom officers are deaf, blind and dumb.
