Two Police officers in Galnewa remanded over soliciting Rs. 30,000 bribe

Colombo,March 7 (Daily Mirror)- Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lankamali today remanded a Sub-Inspector and a Police Constable from the Galnewa Police Station till March 21 over the allegations of soliciting a bribe of Rs. 30,000. 

Suspects, Chaminda Ruwan Amarasinghe, a Sub-Inspector from the Galnewa Police Crime Branch, and Jayalanka Senanayake, a Police Constable were arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption upon a complaint by a resident of Galnewa.

The case emerged when a complainant visited the Galnewa Police Station to report the theft of a harvester machine. However, it had been revealed later during the investigation that the complainant's son had sold the machine in the absence of his father. The person who purchased the machine agreed to return it, leading the complainant withdrawing his request for legal action.  

However, the two police officers had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 30,000 to refrain from taking legal action against the complainant's son. 

Bribery Commission officials told court that the suspects were arrested in front of the Galnewa Police Station’s sports ground while accepting the bribe.
