Tusker ‘Sapumal’ shot and injured

Colombo, Sept. 23 (Daily Mirror) - The tusker known as ‘Sapumal’, a well-known resident of the Hurulu Eco Park and Minneriya National Park, has reportedly been shot by unidentified individuals.

Safari jeep drivers at Kaudulla National Park have confirmed sightings of the injured elephant, according to an Ada Derana reporter.

‘Sapumal’, believed to be around 25 years old, is renowned for his striking tusks, which measure over two and a half feet in length.

Yet another majestic elephant on death row now. Unless bullets are removed, sepsis will set in and he will have a very painful death. As in Kenya, tuskers who due naturally or after injury, have their tusks destroyed to deter poachers and those looking for tusks. Who is looking out for our elephants?

Tragic! 245 Sri Lankan elephants (Elephas maximus maximus) died between January and July this 2025. The large number of Sri Lanka elephant deaths 254, 260 and 257 within last three years is wholly unacceptable.

We must have a Sri Lankan Elephant Conservation Plan for 2025-26. We mustraise funds internationally over the next decade to safeguard the Sri Lankan elephant. To protect the elephants, expand their range, preserve ecosystems, enhance biodiversity in existing habitats, while benefitting communities and other species living alongside them. Instead of electric fences that are dangerous to humans and elephants and expensive why don’t we utilise time tested “Ha-ha” Walls, that are low walls with a trench, or ditch, just in front of it, preventing the ability to climb the wall but maintaining a view of the surrounding landscape. These will specifically keep wild animals, including elephants out of farms and villages, while maintaining a beautiful view of the rolling hills or forest.
