Turkey pledges support for cyclone-affected schools and water projects in Sri Lanka



Colombo, Jan. 21 (Daily Mirror) - In a move aimed at bolstering disaster relief and community development, the Ambassador of Turkey to Sri Lanka, Dr. Semih Lütfü Turgut, met with Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Professor A.H.M.H. Abayarathne, at the Parliament complex in Sri Jayawardenepura. The discussions centered on Turkish support for rebuilding schools in Puttalam District that were severely damaged by Cyclone Ditwah.

Ambassador Turgut confirmed Turkey’s commitment to assist in the reconstruction efforts and expressed plans to visit the affected areas in person to assess the damage. He also pledged support for initiatives to address long-standing drinking water shortages in the region, highlighting Turkey’s focus on practical solutions for communities affected by natural disasters.

The meeting also opened the door for closer cooperation in education, with both sides discussing potential joint programs between Turkish and Sri Lankan institutions. Broader collaboration on economic, social, and cultural initiatives was also explored, reflecting a desire to strengthen ties beyond immediate disaster relief.

Ms. Rumeysa Akcin, Third Secretary of the Turkish Embassy in Colombo, accompanied Ambassador Turgut during the meeting. Officials emphasized that international partnerships like this aim to enhance resilience in vulnerable communities while fostering sustainable development.
