Colombo, June 29 (Daily Mirror) - Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says Sri Lanka's national development cannot be measured solely by the growth of infrastructure and material resources, stressing that lasting progress depends on strengthening national identity, moral values, and cultural bonds.
Speaking at the inaugural "Anubuddhabhi Vandana" Divulapitiya Poson Grand Perahera on June 28, the Prime Minister said development should focus on building a society united by shared values and mutual respect.
She noted that the arrival of Arahant Mahinda Thero introduced not only Buddhism to Sri Lanka but also a rich cultural heritage and principles of governance inspired by the Dasa Raja Dharma. According to the Prime Minister, these values enabled ancient Sri Lanka to build remarkable irrigation systems and religious monuments.
Dr. Amarasuriya added that cultural traditions play a vital role in creating a disciplined and united nation while preserving the country's identity for future generations.
